First, What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning means using a blade to scrape away the top layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, often called "peach fuzz". When done correctly, this process is proven to reveal smoother, brighter skin, lessen the appearance of scars and fine wrinkles, and improve the appearance of makeup.1,2
Sonic dermaplaning tools promise to use high-frequency vibrations to gently remove debris, peach fuzz, and dull surface cells - all without the risks of irritation, cuts, or thicker hair regrowth commonly associated with traditional dermaplaning.
The best part? It’s now something you can do at home. But which tools actually work? To find out, we consulted Dr. Nicolette Natale, DO and skincare expert, to review the products and science of sonic dermaplaning. We tested the two leading devices - Dermaflash Luxe+ and Michael Todd Beauty Sonicsmooth Pro+ - to see which delivers the best results. Read on to find out!

Dermaflash Luxe+ vs. Michael Todd Beauty Sonicsmooth Pro+: Our Test Results
To see which tool actually delivers on the promise of smoother, glowing skin, our editor, Alex (39) tested Dermaflash Luxe+ and Michael Todd Beauty Sonicsmooth Pro+ back-to-back over 4 weeks. We then evaluated them on results, product quality, and overall value.

Results: Dermaflash Wins With Near Perfect Results
Sonic dermaplaning is surprisingly easy to do yourself. In fact, the entire process only takes about 5-10 minutes, and you only need to do it once every 1-2 weeks.
After two weeks of letting her hair grow, Alex tried the Dermaflash Luxe+, which took just 5 minutes. The results were immediately noticeable.

The Luxe+ removed all of Alex’s facial hair, minimized her pores, and left her skin smooth and glowing. She described the experience as a “5-minute facial.” “My skin looks brighter and feels smoother. My face looks and feels a few years younger,” she added.
The hair, dead skin cells, and other gunk visibly shed off the blade with each swipe. “It was sooo satisfying.”

Dr. Natale, our skincare expert, cites the Luxe+ blade’s Microfine Edges as a main reason for its effectiveness. “They remove every trace of peach fuzz and dead skin without tugging or irritation,” she says.
Dermaflash delivered a near flawless experience in five minutes.
Alex let her hair grow back, and two weeks later, tried the Michael Todd Beauty Sonicsmooth Pro+.
The experience? Underwhelming. “The razor does not do as good of a job at removing peach fuzz and dead skin,” she noted. Multiple passes meant the dermaplaning process took twice as long as with the Dermaflash Luxe+.
Rather than smoothly gliding across skin, the blade tugged in a few spots. The net result was skin irritation. “It burned a bit, and my skin was red after” claimed Alex. “I won’t be using it again.”

Dr. Natale echoed these findings, calling Dermaflash Luxe+ “both the safer and more effective choice.”
Product Quality: Dermaflash Wins With Premium Design & Features

Dermaflash Luxe+ made a strong impression right out of the box. The product is sleek, and easy to hold. “The design is intuitive. It just glides over your skin” noted Alex, our tester. The Luxe+ is ergonomically shaped, with an angled blade to account for the various curves of your face.
Dermaflash’s Luxe+’s one speed setting was effective and comfortable. The blade is engineered to get as close to the skin as possible, with features like a custom-designed safety cage to prevent cuts and irritation.

Michael Todd Beauty’s Sonicsmooth Pro+ also has a safety guard; but the blade is a standard razor head and does not contour to the face. “It’s kind of like a drugstore razor with a motor,” said our tester, Alex. After using the Dermaflash “it feels a bit flimsy.”

The Sonicsmooth Pro+ has three sonic speed settings. Our tester only saw results with the highest setting.
Overall Value: Dermaflash Is The Best Bang For Your Buck
Both tools are virtually the same price - the Luxe+ at $169, and Sonicsmooth Pro+ at $172.
The Dermflash Luxe+ includes a PREFLASH facial cleanser with salicylic acid, niacinamide, and witch hazel to deeply exfoliate and brighten skin.
“Before dermaplaning, I recommend using an exfoliating cleanser to remove any makeup, oil, or buildup,” says Dr. Natale. With the Sonicsmooth Pro+, you’ll need to purchase that separately.
Final Verdict: Dermaflash Luxe+ Is the Clear Winner
After weeks of testing and input from skincare expert Dr. Nicolette Natale, the results were clear: Dermaflash Luxe+ is the best sonic dermaplaning tool on the market.

Most importantly, the results speak for themselves - glowing, smooth skin that will take years off your face. From the thoughtful design to the high-quality skincare add-ons, everything about the Dermaflash experience feels intentional.
“If you’re after smoother and brighter skin, Luxe+ is the one I trust,” says Dr. Natale. “It’s easy to use, safe, and you can see and feel a real difference after just one treatment.”
