66% of adults don’t apply sunscreen regularly1 - and the consequences can be serious. Prolonged UV exposure from the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer - the most commonly diagnosed cancer with over 5 million cases each year in the US.2 Especially for active people, doctors recommend applying sunscreen every time you go outside.3

That's why we tested the 3 most popular spray sunscreens made for daily, active use: Freaks of Nature Solar Shield SPF 30 Spray (Mineral Sunscreen), Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Spray (Chemical Sunscreen), and Vacation Classic SPF 50 Spray (Chemical Sunscreen).

We personally tested each + enlisted the help of Dr. Celeste Alvarez (PhD), an expert in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Formulation, to evaluate them on ingredients & formulation, propellants, effectiveness, and price. Is Mineral sunscreen always the better pick over Chemical? What does SPF really mean? Read on for the answers and to find out our top pick.

From left to right, we tested Vacation, Freaks of Nature, and Sun Bum spray sunscreens.

Is Higher SPF Better?

You might assume that a higher SPF number means better protection - but the numbers aren’t the whole story. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UV rays - which is the level dermatologists recommend4 - while SPF 50 blocks just 1% more, at 98%. The FDA warns that higher SPF values can be misleading to consumers, since they imply more protection than the difference actually delivers.4

That means most people reach for the higher number while overlooking what's actually in the formula. A higher SPF requires higher concentrations of chemical filters, which the FDA has declined to classify as safe, because its own studies found they absorb through the skin into the bloodstream at levels that require further safety testing, with long-term effects still unknown.4,6 Mineral filters like zinc oxide don't absorb - they stay on the skin's surface, which is why the FDA recognizes them as safe.⁴

What to Look For in a Spray Sunscreen

Once you hit SPF 30, you've got the protection you need3 - so what matters beyond that? According to Dr. Alvarez, the best spray sunscreens block UV without compromising skin health: they apply evenly with no chemical propellants, absorb cleanly, and avoid ingredients that harm the environment.

  • Mineral vs. Chemical Filters: Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically deflect UV rays from skin – and are not absorbed. Chemical filters readily absorb into the skin and bloodstream – in an FDA study, filters including avobenzone and octocrylene (both in the sprays we tested) showed up in the blood at levels the FDA considers high enough to require further safety testing for cancer and reproductive risk.⁶
  • Skin Barrier & Microbiome Support: Your skin hosts trillions of bacteria that regulate inflammation, moisture retention, and barrier function. High-alcohol formulations, like those in most spray sunscreens (including the Sun Bum and Vacation products in this test), disrupt this microbiome and impair barrier function with daily use.7 “A sunscreen you apply every day should not damage your skin,” says Dr. Alvarez.
  • Propellant: Many aerosol sprays use hydrocarbon chemical propellants to push product out of the can - adding synthetic chemicals to every application. Air-powered BOV (Bag on Valve) systems use only compressed air, with no chemical propellants and continuous spray at any angle. None of the brands we tested use chemical propellants.
  • Environment-Safe Formulation: Chemical filters, including avobenzone and homosalate, are documented to cause harm to coral reefs - that’s why many chemical filters are banned in several states.⁵ A mineral-only formulation like Freaks of Nature sidesteps the concern entirely, with no chemical UV filters to wash off into waterways.

So how do these brands compare? Let's find out.

Ingredients & Formulation: Freaks of Nature Wins

Freaks of Nature wins as the only mineral-based formulation in our test

🥇 Freaks of Nature Solar Shield wins with the safest and most skin-supportive formulation we tested. Its sole active ingredient is Zinc Oxide 16.5% - 100% mineral, non-nano, broad-spectrum, and environment-safe - with no chemical filters. Non-nano means the zinc oxide particles stay on the surface of the skin rather than absorbing; broad-spectrum means the sunscreen blocks both UVA rays (which cause aging and skin damage) and UVB rays (which cause burning).

Beyond UV protection, Freaks of Nature's inactive ingredients are primarily plant derived. Aloe Juice, Jojoba Oil, and Gluconolactone soothe and moisturize skin to prevent the dehydration that's common with sun exposure, while Bamboo and Green Tea extracts provide additional antioxidant defense against UV-generated free radicals. Natural bioferment preservatives reinforce the skin barrier without disrupting the microbiome.

Full Ingredients: Active: Zinc Oxide 16.5%. Inactive: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Aqua/Water, Bambusa Arundinacea (Bamboo) Stem Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Japanese Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Dilauryl Citrate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Gluconolactone, Glycerin, Hydrogenated Methyl Abietate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Lauryl Glucoside, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Methylcellulose, Octyldodecyl Citrate Crosspolymer, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate, Populus Tremuloides Bark Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate, Sodium Phytate, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Sorbitan Laurate, Tocopherol, Xanthan Gum.

🥈 Vacation Classic Spray comes in second with a broad-spectrum formula that relies on chemical filters for protection. Still, it’s cleaner than most chemical sunscreens with skin-conditioning ingredients like Shea Oil, Aloe Vera, and Vitamin E. But the alcohol-denatured base - used to keep the formula thin enough to spray - still dries out and irritates skin with daily use - and the higher SPF requires higher concentrations of chemical filters that absorb into the bloodstream.

Full Ingredients: Active: Avobenzone (2.9%), Homosalate (8.8%), Octisalate (4.9%), Octocrylene (8.6%). Inactive: Acrylates/Octylacrylamide Copolymer, Alcohol Denat., Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Extract, Diisopropyl Adipate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene, Fragrance, Musa Sapientum (Banana) Fruit Extract, Polyester-8, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Sun Bum Original Spray comes in last. Like Vacation, it’s a broad-spectrum formula reliant on chemical filters that absorb into the bloodstream - but where Vacation adds skin-conditioning inactives, Sun Bum includes nothing to offset the drying, alcohol-denatured base. That means no support for the skin microbiome, instead stripping the barrier with every application. It also lists “fragrance" as an ingredient, a catch-all the FDA lets brands use without naming the individual ingredients behind it - which can include undisclosed irritants and allergens.

Full Ingredients: Active: Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 15%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 7%. Inactive: Alcohol Denat. (54%), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Acrylates/Octylacrylamide Copolymer, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, PPG-5-Ceteth-20, Fragrance, Tocopherol.

Propellants: It’s a Tie

All three brands use air-powered propellants

Traditional aerosol sunscreens use hydrocarbon propellants - butane, isobutane, propane - to push product out of the can. These are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to air pollution and irritate skin with repeated exposure.8

🥇 Freaks of Nature Solar Shield, Vacation Classic Spray, and Sun Bum Original Spray all tie on propellants. All three use air-powered systems that dispense product using only compressed air, with no VOCs. This allows continuous spray at any angle, including upside down.

Application & Effectiveness: Freaks of Nature Wins

Non-chemical ingredients are only beneficial if the sunscreen actually works. Our tester, John, is an avid runner who lives in the Southwest, where over 70% of days are sunny year-round. He tested each spray every day for two weeks, applying as directed:

Freaks of Nature applies cleanly and best supports the skin.

🥇 Freaks of Nature Solar Shield wins with the cleanest application and the most hydration of the three. John described it “as more like applying a light lotion than a sunscreen" - it settled quickly with a minimal white cast that disappeared in a minute. The nozzle also sprayed an even mist every time, with none of the clogging or sputtering common to mineral sprays. After two weeks of daily outdoor use, John noticed "less redness and irritation" in sun-exposed areas compared to his baseline, and his skin felt "more hydrated by end of day" than with the other two sprays. The fragrance-free formula also meant no lingering scent mixing with sweat.

Vacation spray requires more rubbing to apply and offers less skin support.

🥈 Vacation Classic Spray came in second. The formula left more wetness on application and required about 30 seconds of rubbing to fully absorb, but applied evenly in the end. John also noticed less protection - his skin was "slightly red and dry after time in the sun," likely due to the alcohol base's drying effect, and he needed more moisturizer on Vacation days than Freaks of Nature days. The fragrance started pleasant but became a bit cloying after a day of wear.

Sun Bum's high-alcohol formula left skin the driest of the three.

Sun Bum Original came in last for effectiveness as a daily-use product. It has the highest alcohol content of the three and nothing added to condition the skin. It sprayed and rubbed in fine, but left John's skin feeling the driest and flakiest of the three.

Price & Value: Freaks of Nature Wins

At 6 oz each, how does the cost of these sprays compare?

🥇 Freaks of Nature Solar Shield wins with the best value at $18.79 / 6 oz with TCD's discount ($20.80 without) for the most complete and moisturizing formulation tested.

Sun Bum Original Spray and Vacation Classic Spray both come in a bit higher at $19.00 / 6 oz - and lower value, with less effective formulations and chemical-based active ingredients.

The Overall Winner: Freaks of Nature

Which sunscreen spray is best? After testing all three, we recommend the one that provides mineral protection, supports the skin barrier and microbiome, and performs under real outdoor conditions. And the only one we’d be comfortable using every day. That's Freaks of Nature.

Dr. Alvarez agrees: “I recommend Freaks of Nature Solar Shield. It's the only spray we tested built on mineral zinc oxide, which blocks UV on the skin's surface instead of absorbing into the body, and the rest of the formula actually supports the skin rather than drying it out.”
