Dehydration is surprisingly common - in fact, 75% of adults are chronically dehydrated.1 And even mild dehydration can impair athletic performance, focus, and recovery.2 An hour of exercise drains up to a liter of sweat - and water alone can’t replace the minerals lost.3 And that’s where electrolyte powders can help. We enlisted the help of Elizabeth Cook, RDN, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, to understand how electrolyte powders replenish the minerals your body needs to perform - and what actually matters when choosing one.

Combining Cook's expertise with hands-on testing by TCD staff, we compared three top electrolyte powders: Freaks of Nature Skin Support Electrolyte, Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier, and LMNT Recharge on: ingredients, added sugar, effectiveness, taste, and price. In addition, should you consider added ingredients to support skin, gut, and UV protection? We found one clear winner - keep reading to find out which.

From left to right, we tested Liquid I.V., Freaks of Nature, and LMNT electrolyte powders

Should You Be Taking an Electrolyte Powder?

We asked Cook who would benefit from a daily electrolyte supplement. Her answer: anyone who sweats regularly.

"When you sweat, you lose minerals, not just water," Cook explains. "If you replace fluid but not minerals, blood becomes more dilute, which can lead to a condition called hyponatremia - a deficiency of minerals that causes nausea and fatigue."

The five key electrolytes lost in sweat - sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and magnesium - play different, important, roles. Low sodium causes cramps and headaches. Low potassium causes weakness and dizziness. Calcium deficiency leads to tingling and poor muscle contraction. Low chloride causes disorientation. And low magnesium can result in spasms, soreness, and slower recovery.

If you’re active, that means you should look to replace all five electrolytes.

What to Look For in an Electrolyte Powder

What should you look for in a daily electrolyte? According to Cook, the best powders cover the full mineral profile lost in sweat, avoid sugar, support recovery beyond hydration, and taste good enough to drink every day.

  • Complete Mineral Profile…: The five key electrolytes lost in sweat - sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and magnesium - all play different roles in performance and recovery. "A complete electrolyte powder contains all of them," Cook says.
  • …with Balanced Sodium: Sodium is the easiest to consume from food. Because excess sodium can raise blood pressure and add cardiovascular risk over time,8 look for electrolyte supplements that contain around 500mg. “Many contain too much sodium for everyday use," Cook says.
  • Low or Zero Added Sugar: Excess sugar in a daily electrolyte supplement can cause blood sugar spikes and energy crashes. If you’re not going for a marathon or triathlon PR, you probably already get enough sugar in your diet!5

In addition to providing balanced, complete electrolyte replacements, some supplements add protective ingredients:

  • Gut & Skin Support: ingredients like prebiotic fiber, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C support nutrient absorption, reduce mid-workout gut upset, and reinforce the skin barrier.
  • UV Defense: For outdoor training, ingredients like polypodium leucotomos and astaxanthin actually safely reduce UV-induced cell damage from the inside out.6,7

So how do these brands compare? Let's find out.

Ingredients: Freaks of Nature Wins

Most electrolyte powders fall short of full mineral replacement, rely on sugar for taste, or overdose sodium.

Freaks of Nature contains the most complete formulation of the brands we tested

🥇 Freaks of Nature Skin Support Electrolyte wins with the most complete and effective formulation we tested. It's the only powder we reviewed that replaces all five electrolytes - sodium (500mg), potassium (350mg), magnesium (100mg), calcium (200mg), and chloride (470mg) - with 0g added sugar.

Beyond the optimal electrolyte profile, what really sets Freaks of Nature apart is its protective ingredients - which none of the other brands contain. It adds astaxanthin, polypodium leucotomos, and Red Orange Complex - all clinically studied to reduce UV-induced damage from the inside by neutralizing the free radicals UV exposure creates in your skin.6,7 These ingredients are proven safe for daily use,9,10 and make Freaks of Nature the only brand we tested with additional benefits for anyone who is outdoors regularly. It also contains prebiotic fiber and ginger root extract to support nutrient absorption and reduce the gut upset that can come with mid-workout supplementation, plus hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to reinforce the skin barrier. That makes Freaks of Nature not just an electrolyte powder, but a true performance supplement

Full Ingredients: Vitamin A (as B-carotene), Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin D (as Cholecalciferol), Vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopheryl acetate), Vitamin B3 (as Niacinamide), Calcium (as Calcium Citrate), Magnesium (as Magnesium Malate), Zinc (as Zinc Gluconate), Chloride (from Pink Himalayan Salt and Potassium Chloride), Sodium (from Pink Himalayan Salt), Potassium (as Potassium Chloride), Astaxanthin (from Haematococcus pluvialis Algae), Polypodium leucotomos Leaf Extract, Red Orange (Citrus sinensis) Fruit Extract (RedOrange Complex™), Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum, Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Root Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate. Other Ingredients: Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Rebaudioside A (Stevia Leaf Extract).

🥈 LMNT Recharge comes in second with partial mineral replacement. The formula replaces 3 of 5 electrolytes - sodium (1,000mg), potassium (200mg), and magnesium (60mg) - and contains 0g added sugar, but skips calcium and chloride and contains nothing for skin, gut, or recovery. Additionally, LMNT contains 1,000mg of sodium per stick - 43% of the daily recommended limit for adults (2,300mg) in a single packet.8 Since the average adult consumes over 3,300mg per day from food alone,11 daily LMNT use can push sodium intake past healthy levels.

Full Ingredients: Salt (Sodium Chloride), Malic Acid, Magnesium Malate, Potassium Chloride, Natural Watermelon Flavor, Stevia Leaf Extract.

Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier comes in last with the least complete formula. It replaces only 2 of 5 electrolytes - sodium (500mg) and potassium (370mg) - with no magnesium, calcium, or chloride, and contains nothing for skin, gut, or recovery. It also relies on 11g of added sugar per stick - 44% of the American Heart Association's daily recommended limit12 - with no additional benefits for skin, gut, or recovery.

Full Ingredients: Pure Cane Sugar, Dextrose, Citric Acid, Salt, Potassium Citrate, Sodium Citrate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Silicon Dioxide, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Natural Flavors, Stevia Leaf Extract, Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), Vitamin B5 (Calcium Pantothenate), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin).

Sugar: Freaks of Nature and LMNT Tie

🥇 Freaks of Nature and 🥇 LMNT tie with 0g added sugar - ideal for daily use without blood sugar spikes or energy crashes.

Liquid I.V. contains 11g of added sugar per stick - nearly half the American Heart Association's daily recommended limit.12 For most active people, sports scientists only recommend sugar intake during intense exercise lasting longer than an hour4 - meaning Liquid I.V.'s sugar load is more likely to spike blood sugar mid-workout and set up an energy crash than help you perform.

Effectiveness: Freaks of Nature Wins

A daily supplement is useless if the electrolyte doesn't actually perform during training. Our tester, John, is an avid runner and lifter who trains 5-6 days a week, often in direct sun. John tested each electrolyte during a 5-mile run and longer training sessions over two weeks:

Freaks of Nature mixed well and provided steady energy throughout John’s workouts

🥇 Freaks of Nature Skin Support Electrolyte wins with zero cramping, balanced energy, and faster skin recovery. During training sessions, John sipped the electrolytes throughout the workout and noted no cramping and steady energy for the full workout. The electrolytes also mixed well, with “no salty residue leftover.” Most surprising? “Less skin redness and inflammation after my outdoor runs.”

John felt more fatigue on LMNT, and the high sodium made it hard to drink

🥈 LMNT Recharge came in second. John reported no cramping, but felt less steady energy by the end of his workouts than with Freaks of Nature. The sodium was also noticeably too high, making LMNT hard to drink during workouts - limiting its effectiveness. LMNT also didn't mix cleanly - John noted “salty residue at the bottom of every time.”

Liquid I.V. offered the fewest benefits, and John’s energy spiked and crashed

Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier came in last for effectiveness. John reported no cramping during training, but found the sweetness made it hard to drink mid-workout - "more like a juice than hydration." He enjoyed the taste casually, but knowing he already gets plenty of sugar from his diet, didn't love the idea of adding 11g more every time he trained.

Taste: Freaks of Nature Wins

John sipped each brand during and after training sessions. His tasting notes:

Freaks of Nature is the best-tasting supplement we tested

🥇 Freaks of Nature Skin Support Electrolyte wins with a natural tasting fruit flavor that’s easy to drink during workouts and casual sipping. The North Shore flavor mixes passionfruit, guava, and lime - “it tastes like light pressed juice,” John said, “No artificial aftertaste or overwhelming saltiness.”

🥈 Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier came in second. John tested both the Mango and Guava flavors and found both “tasty for casual sipping, like a sugary fruit juice” - but the sweetness made it feel less like a hydration drink during workouts.

LMNT Recharge was overly salty and hard to drink. John tried the Watermelon Salt flavor and found the 1,000mg sodium load made it hard to get down during training - "it tasted and felt like drinking from the ocean."

Price: Freaks of Nature and LMNT Tie

If you workout often, we recommend one serving of electrolyte powder a day. How do the costs of these brands compare?

Freaks of Nature (center) and LMNT (right) tie on price

🥇 Freaks of Nature is $1.40/stick with TCD's discount ($1.56 without) for the most complete formula tested.

🥇 LMNT ties at $1.30/stick. The cheapest per serving, but with an incomplete electrolyte profile.

Liquid I.V. is the most expensive at $1.56/stick - with the least complete formula and 11g of added sugar.

The Overall Winner: Freaks of Nature

Which electrolyte powder is best? After testing all three, we recommend the one that replaces all five key electrolytes, adds clinically studied UV protection, gut support, and skin barrier reinforcement, and tastes good enough to drink every day. And that's Freaks of Nature.

Cook agrees: "I recommend Freaks of Nature. It's the only electrolyte powder I've seen that covers all five key electrolytes with no added sugar, while also supporting skin and gut health with ingredients that actually have clinical evidence behind them."
